The Republic of Panama is located at the Southeast end of Central America. It has a surface area of 75.517 kmē and 2,210 km2 of maritime territory, with a total territory area of 78,200 kmē.

Its capital city is Panama City.

Language
The official language is Spanish. However, most of the population is proficient in English.

The country is divided into 10 province and 5 districts.

Government
Panama is an independent country and has a sovereign state.

Weather
The Republic of Panama has a tropical, damp weather, with occasional rainfalls. Temperature is relatively high and can change a little during the year.

Currency
The legal tender in the country is the U.S. dollar and the Balboa.

Apparels
The use of the following types of clothing for every occasion is recommended, always favoring light clothing because of the warm weather):

Academic activities of the Seminar: business casual. For men this includes a shirt, pants and dress shoes, no tie or jacket.  For women this means dress pants or skirt, blouse and open shoes.
Tourist activities: Casual clothes for warm weather .

For other social activities carried out by the participant, we suggest business casual clothes.

Transportation to the country
The best way to get to Panama is through airlines. Shops
They are usually open Monday-Saturday, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. Some of the shops are open on Sundays.

Important facts

Electricity
The common voltage in Panama is 120 V. The frequency is 60 Hz.

Sanitation
There is access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.

Means of transport
We recommend you to use the taxi service available at hotels and ask them to call a Radio Taxi instead of taking them on the street.  In any case, agree the fare with the driver in advance.

Safety
While it is safe to travel in the commercial areas of the city, you should not wear valuable accessories, big amounts of money and you should use the hotel taxi service.

Tips
It is usual to leave 10% tips for service in restaurants.

Methods of Payment
US Dollar is the legal currency in Panama. Balboa, Panama's monetary unit, equal to dollar's value.   Credit cards from American Express, MasterCard, VISA and traveler's checks are generally accepted in shops and restaurants.

State taxes in Panama
Tax on goods and services in Panama is a 7% ITBMS. Tax on hotel services and lodging is 10%.

The use of cellular phones is widespread in Panama and we have roaming service at the rates set by your operator, or you can purchase a local chip in Panama at the airport or in shops in the city.
